Writing to think

I’ve listened to this interview of Kevin Kelly by Tim Ferris all the way through about three times now:

Two thoughts that stick out:

Write as if you are emailing or sending a letter to a friend explaining your ideas.

You don’t write to communicate ideas. You write to better understand your ideas, and to get them yourself. Kevin Kelly talks about how as he writes he gets ideas, and when he has to articulate it the idea really comes into focus.  The process of writing isn’t “step one have idea , step two write it down.” Many times he thinks he has an idea, but didn’t really understand it until he had to write it down.

This is the purpose for this blog, more than anything else. To bring the things in my head I like to think about into focus.
